"Christmas in Heaven": A Heartfelt Tribute to Faith and Family

A review of Anthony DeStefano's latest children's book Christmas in Heaven.

+JMJ+ Anthony DeStefano’s Christmas in Heaven is a profoundly moving book that beautifully blends faith with the joy of reminiscing about loved ones during the holiday season. From the moment my children saw the vintage-style illustrations on the cover, they were captivated (as was I). These nostalgic images perfectly complement the story’s warm and reflective nature, and they capture the essence of Christmases past.

One of the most commendable aspects of the book is its inclusion of Purgatory in the introduction. The author encourages the readers to pray for souls. Sadly, this is a topic often overlooked, especially in children’s literature. The author’s decision to address this significant part of the Catholic faith is both brave and thoughtful.

I absolutely adore the bond between the grandfather and his grandson. Both are mourning the loss of a loved one, and the grandfather’s way of comforting his grandson is profoundly touching, genuine, and heartwarming.

The story's portrayal of saints preparing to celebrate Jesus's birthday shines throughout. Each saint is depicted engaging in activities that reflect their well-known attributes—St. Martha tidying up, St. Therese handing out flowers, and St. Cecilia singing, to name a few. The humorous depiction of St. Martha's cleaning struggles, ultimately assisted by St. Jude (the patron saint of hopeless cases, wielding a vacuum), adds a delightful touch of levity. This clever and unique portrayal enhances the story’s charm and heartfelt message.

Additionally, the inclusion of a glossary of angels and saints at the end provides a valuable educational resource, making this book a must-have for families, especially those grieving the loss of loved ones. Christmas in Heaven offers comfort and a joyful reminder of the peace and happiness our departed loved ones now experience. This touching book not only brings solace but also reaffirms the enduring beauty of the love we have for one another and the love that God has for each and every one of us.
